Last Friday, SLA and Outsell, the content industry advisory firm, issued a press release about a new partnership to deliver a range of services and programs to SLA members. The agreement will be formally announced in the exhibit hall, booth 401 at 12:30 p.m. today.

Under the agreement, SLA members will have discounts on Outsell Briefings and other content, the ability to participate in and share results of joint studies, a training course, and more.

As promised, here’s the list of award winners from the reception last night. No surprises, these were announced some time ago and have been listed on the SLA Web site. No drama, no suspense. But at least recipients have advance knowledge and can bring the proper attire (it’s dress-uptime) for the Sunday night reception (I remember it was the Wednesday night banquet, which required even dressier dress-up), but that wasn’t actually very long ago.

Seeing Roger Summit, Dialog founder and past CEO, at the Dialog booth avidly discussing the latest Dialog developments was like deja vu all over again, particularly now that his beard is back. Traffic around the exhibit hall during the reception this afternoon has been busy. Stay tuned for a later report on the SLA Awards Reception tonight.

The continuing education sessions are over, most committee meetings have ended (one Board member told me she’d been to 4 meetings befor 10:30 this morning), and there’s free food and wine (thanks to Thomson) in the exhibition hall. Now the place is beginning to look crowded. People are looking at new stuff and two Danes just walked into the Information Today booth, now two more joined us. There’s no English being spoken here. And you thought SLA wasn’t international!

I went past the ProQuest booth to see where the Webcam is. It’s unobtrusive and most people don’t realize they’re being webcast. If you can’t see the Webcam from their Website, try http://12.153.11.46 as an alternative.

It’s afternoon here in the Nashville exhibit hall, and after a quiet Sunday morning the traffic seems to be picking up. The eye-catching freebies seem to be blinking trinkets; three varieties are available from the Institute of Physics Publishing - who claim to be the original blinkers - Backstage Library Works with the stars, and a blinking button from the American Physical Society. Across from all this is Open Text Corporation with a gumball machine, but the gumballs don’t blink.

ONLINE News Editor Suzanne Sabroski just found an empty space in the exhibit hall. According to the map, that space should be occupied by D&B, but they’re apparently not here. Maybe we should check their credit report.

But there are some new exhibitors. Eliyon Technologies (which just announced a distribution deal with HighBeam, a company not on the SLA exhibit floor), FRANCE-BIEF (all about the French book trade), Hoover’s, Skyminder, and VTLS are some of them.

I’m in the exhibit hall, watching final preparations of the exhibitors before the doors open for the attendees. The hall is pretty impressive. High ceilings allow for some elaborate booths. The Thomson companies are all together, using the common branding logo they now use for identification. Dialog is towards the front of the hall, as is LexisNexis. The Information Today booth is about halfway back in the 600 aisle.

I also arrived at the hotel yesterday. It’s a good thing the hotel staff are so helpful about providing directions - I’ve needed it. I haven’t had much trouble with the conference center, but I’ve lost my way to and from my hotel room a few times. All the hallways look alike. But, this is a beautiful facility and it is certainly nice to have things "under one roof."

The division networking receptions got underway last night. Lots of good food, drink, and conversations. I’m off to the opening of the exhibit hall now. I’m meeting today with the folks at Open Text who are announcing Version 10 of Livelink Collections Server, which provides a single, secure repository for libraries (whether public or corporate) and other organizations to manage large, complex documents and collections with dense subject matter and unique terminology. I’ll have more to say on this later.

I arrived yesterday at the conference hotel. It reminds me a whole lot of Disneyland without all the rides. I expect to see Mickey come waltzing down the sidewalk any minute now.

The SLA Board yesterday finalized one new division — Competitive Intelligence — and one new chapter — Australia-New Zealand. Sue Henczel is the president of the newly formed chapter, so congratulations to her!
