Speaking of independent information professionals, one of the busy areas has been the well-lit Association of Independent Information Professionals (AIIP) booth #228. Directors and regular members volunteer time for setup and staffing, and attendees can stop by and hear real live stories from practitioners in the trenches. AIIP held a board meeting on Sunday, with a two-hour open portion for members to sit in on. AIIP reports increasing membership numbers, and a new initiative to expand their global reach.

Independent information professionals are always among the crowds at SLA; this year Annie Olesen of A9 Consulting in Denmark has been interviewing several consultants for a study she is conducting. Commissioned by the Union of Danish Libraries to determine the needs, characteristics, and trends of outsourcing in the information industry, Annie has teamed up with Ulla de Stricker from Toronto to gather data and brainstorm the study. I was interviewed by Annie and Ulla in the exhibitor’s lounge today and look forward to seeing the finished product.

I visited with Carol Knoblauch, product manager at Open Text – in booths 948-950 — about the introduction of version 10 of Livelink Collections Server. The new version provides an expanded platform for Livelink for Libraries (formerly Techlib), adding broad document collection features to the library automation application.
According to Carol, the biggest change is in expanded scalability of the product–about 4 times larger across the board, including characters in records and full text of documents. The new product also offers expanded search capabilities and better navigation.
By the way, Open Text recently announced that it ranked 11th in Business 2.0 magazine’s list of the 100 fastest growing technology companies, called the 2004 B2 100.

Two attendees enjoy a take-out lunch while they listen to Mary Ellen Bates
Attendees headed for conference rooms at noon, following the exhibits-only time in the exhibit hall on Monday morning, The session on “Mining the Invisible Web,” featuring Mary Ellen Bates was filled to overflowing, although we have to wonder why the room was only half-filled with chairs, leaving lots of room for the overflow crowd on the floor at the back??
Attendees who attended the Corporate Roundtable on selective outsourcing enjoyed a delicious served lunch (ticketed) while they listened to Duncan McKenzie (PepsiCo) and a team from Lehmann Brothers discuss how outsourcing really can be a beneficial realignment of skill sets, roles, responsibilities, and tasks among the right people.

The poster sessions on Teaching Users Via the Web showcased about a dozen presenters and a good crowd of interested attendees during the first session this afternoon. It’s worth scanning the program carefully to find hidden nuggets of sessions like this. It was presented by the Chemistry Division and sponsored by the American Chemical Society, but many of the poster presentations were broadly applicable, and not the least bit scientific (says this decidedly non-scientific blogger).

Carol Tenopir & Gerry Lundeen study a map of the conference complex
Finding our way around the conference venue has been a major challenge, despite the maps given out when you register at the hotel desk and all our preliminary scouting. One attendee said she got a head start by arriving on Friday, but she still got lost on the way to a session today. Still, the walk past the tropical flowers and plantings, streams, and waterfalls on the way to and from conference sessions, or to have lunch in the outdoor food court is a welcome refresher.

Those trying to decide between the multliple conflicting sessions at SLA have the opportunity to buy an audio tape of some sessions. SLA stopped doing this for a couple of years, and attendees were less than thrilled. I, for one, am delighted that audio tapes have returned, retrograde as the technology may be. The order form is available at a table across from the conference registration area in the hotel or on the Web at www.mobiltape.com

At 7:30 in the morning, the news librarians packed a room to hear about News Research Without Borders. I caught the first portion it, about Canada. Interesting to learn how little data the Canadian government cares to share, not only on the national level, but provincial information as well. Lots of good pointers, lots of valuable Web sites. The slides should be up at the News Division Web site soon.

Conference attendees chatted with friends as they gathered for the opening session of the conference this morning. The conference officially kicked off as Conference Chair Suzi Hayes and SLA President Cindy Hill welcomed SLA members to Nashville. Elizabeth Rector from LexisNexis introduced technologist and expert mountain climber, Carl S. Ledbetter, as the keynote speaker.

The Three ITI Bloggers
Paula Hane, Marydee Ojala, Suzanne Sabrowski
Kevin Sims from Instant Photographs took photos in a booth at the back of the Info-Expo Exhibit Hall on Sunday morning. SLA members (and the Three ITI Bloggers) had a ball mugging for the camera as they donned hats and country music gear! There’s no word on whether their music matched the authentic costumes, and since this blog is only posting text and images, no streaming audio, I guess we’ll never know!
