Signs of the Times

ITI Bloggers October 29th, 2007

This used to be one of the busiest areas between sessions–the phones.  Now it’s deserted because everybody has a cell phone.

The Conference Opens to a Record Crowd

ITI Bloggers October 29th, 2007

The 11th Internet Librarian conference (8th in Monterey) opened with a preliminary count of 1,385 registrants, 102 exhibitors, and 67 Exhibits-only registrations, for a total of 1,554, which makes this the largest Internet Librarian conference to date.  Attendees are here from 48 states, the District of Columbia, and 11 countries.

Tom Hogan Sr, Information Today’s CEO, told us about "retronyms": old names for objects that need new clarification.  For example, watches became "digital watches" and "analog watches", and "Coffee" became "regular coffee" and "decaf coffee".  So now we have "Internet Librarians".  What is a Non-Internet Librarian?  Fill out your attendee questionnaire and give us your suggestion.  The person submitting the best definition will win a $200 American Express gift certificate.

Tom  Hogan Sr. and Jane Dysart chat with Lee Rainie at the opening session before Lee’s keynote address.

Monterey Public Library Welcomes Internet Librarians

ITI Bloggers October 29th, 2007

On Sunday evening the Monterey Public Library graciously hosted Internet Librarian attendees for a session called What’s Happening in IL Space? The PL is just a few blocks from the Monterey Conference Center, and a number of conferees took the pleasant walk to hear various speakers talk about what they’re doing with Web 2.0 tools.

Here, Kitty Pope of the Alliance Library System wraps up a tour of the libraries in Second Life.

Internet Librarian, Yes. But Wait. There’s More!: Internet @ Schools!

ITI Bloggers October 27th, 2007

A word to the educators among you librarians attending IL. (N.B.: That would be all of you, of course.) There’s a "conference within a conference" happening down in the Bonsai Room on Monday and Tuesday of Internet Librarian. It’s the K-12 media specialists’ own Internet @ Schools conference, organized by library media specialist Susan Geiger and me, Dave Hoffman, editor of Multimedia & Internet @ Schools magazine. We’ll head to our venue right after Lee Rainie’s opening keynote and delve into a program of sessions with a K-12 education focus covering Web 2.0, Library 2.0, Information Literacy, and a host of teaching and learning tactics, tools, and resources.

Want to know more? Check out the sessions on pages 22 and 23 of the IL final program. Among the presenters you IL regulars may already know are Robert Lackie, Aaron Schmidt, Steven Cohen, and Gary Price. And Information Searcher publisher and editor Pam Berger—whom I just saw present yesterday in Reno at the American Association of School Librarians conference—will be our Tuesday morning keynote speaker. They and our other teacher-librarian presenters will have lots to say about preparing today’s students to function in this 21st century information landscape.

A Note from the Conference Organizers

ITI Bloggers October 24th, 2007

A quick note from Information Today, Inc. regarding the California fires. We are obviously monitoring the situation in California as everyone is. There is currently no expected impact on the Northern California region in general, and Monterey and the Internet Librarian conference specifically. Also, there does not seem to be any airline disruption getting to and from Monterey.  Our thoughts are with the people impacted by the fires.

Internet Access

ITI Bloggers October 18th, 2007

I hope you are getting ready for Internet Librarian in Monterey.  In answer to several questions about Internet access, there will again be a Blogger’s Alley in the Exhibit Hall, which will have Wi-Fi access, and access will also be available in the registration lobby and the adjacent seating area.  There may be other areas where access will be available, and we are working on that.  Check back here frequently.

Welcome to the Information Today blog for the Internet Librarian 2007 conference! Please continue to watch this space for news as the time for the conference approaches.

The conference this year will be in the same place as last year–Monterey, CA. The dates are October 29-31 with pre-conference workshops on Saturday, October 27 and Sunday, October 28. The concurrent Internet@Schools West conference will be on October 29 and 30. It’s time now to register for the conferences and make your airline and hotel arrangements, if you haven’t already done that. Click here to see the advance programs and get full details. You can also view the conference wiki, where there is a wealth of additional information as well as lots of "helpful hints to the wise" here.

Once again, the ITI editorial staff will be blogging both conferences live, so be sure to check this blog often. And if you’re planning to blog the conference and haven’t been in touch with me, please click on my name below and send me an e-mail. You will receive a special "BLOGGER" ribbon, access to the press room, and a link to your blog will be available on the conference blogger’s page.

Flickr and Technorati tags for Internet Librarian and Internet@Schools West are IL2007 and ISW2007, respectively. Please add these to your postings.

If you need any help or any information, please get in touch. I look forward to seeing you soon in Monterey!

I hope you like the photo of our "blog mascot" above.  He’s resting up now to be ready for all the conference activities ahead!
