Showdown in Charleston: EBSCO and Serials Solutions Face Off

Competition in the discovery systems marketplace is intense.  A recent Library Journal article said that “If competition is the hallmark of a robust market, then the discovery interface marketplace is plenty robust.”  Two of the leading vendors, EBSCO and Serials Solutions have been trading barbs in the Letters to the Editor pages of The Charleston Advisor (view a list of the letters).  In one of the letters,  Stan Sorenson, Vice President, Product Management and Marketing for Serials Solutions proposed:

“Rather than engage in a war of letters where each company makes claims and counter claims I recommend enabling librarians to decide for themselves which product best meets their discovery needs. How about a head-to-head, live comparison in front of librarians–Summon versus EBSCO Discovery Service?  We are happy to show up at the place and time of your choosing.”

The challenge was taken up by the Charleston Conference Organizers, and the showdown will occur on Thursday, November 4 at 3:00 PM in the Colonial Ballroom of the Francis Marion Hotel in Charleston, SC.   In response to Sorenson, the program says, “This is the time.  This is the place.”  It should be fascinating!  (The entire Charleston Conference program is now available online.)

(By the way, I plan to be blogging at the Charleston Conference, so watch for a full account here.)
