If you find yourself in London and want to increase your knowledge or broaden your professional perspective, check out the British Library’s What’s On page, where you will find events on a wide variety of subjects. For example, the October schedule includes presentations on London and the Olympics, materials preservation (a tour of the Conservation Studios), Your Brain and Sound, book piracy (The Stationers Under Threat), and other subjects. Most of these events last for around two hours, and many of them are in the evening. Most of them require advance reservations and have a nominal cost.
CILIP, the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals, also offers an extensive series of short events aimed at library and information professionals. On its What’s On page for October, for example, one finds New Professionals Information Day, What Does Information Literacy Mean to You, library visits, Going Beyond Google, and many others. Most of these events are day-long and have registration fees.
For those who cannot attend the major conferences, these short events are excellent for providing networking opportunities as well as professional enhancement. Check them out!
