Updating my earlier post about Dr. Marty Klein’s remarks at yesterday’s Intellectual Freedom Roundtable . . .
Well, I slept on it, and I think the session may have been about the First Amendment, after all.
Dr. Klein ended his remarks by saying, “If you want to watch Comedy Central, you need to defend other’s rights to watch pornography, because both are being attacked by the same people.”
Another way of saying this, considering Shawn Healy’s remarks at the Empowerment Conference yesterday, is that if you want to enjoy any of the freedoms granted by the First Amendment, then you need to respect the other freedoms, too: Speech, religion, press, assembly, and petitition.
That’s our social contract, and I think we should all be able to agree with that. Easier said than done.
