Showing his baseball sympathies, Tom Hogan Sr., president of Information Today, opened IL 2008 and presented a few statistics. He told us that paid attendance is around 900, and attendees come from 48 states, the District of Columbia, and 13 countries. There are 150 speakers and moderators.
Recalling last year’s opening session, Tom also reported the results of the competition for the best "retronym" (a term for an old object needing clarification). The top retronym terms that were submitted for a non-Internet librarian were:
[insert supervisor’s name] Librarian
Wallenda Librarian (flying high without the Internet)
The winning submission was "Librarian 1.0", and the submitter will receive a gift certificate.
