Off and Running!

ITI Bloggers March 22nd, 2006

CIL 2006 is starting, and so far all is going well. Attendees are lining up to get their badges and conference bags, and Information Today’s John Yersak is busy keeping everything running smoothly. It’s a beautiful sunny day (if unseasonably cold) in Washington. Be sure and check back here frequently for updates.

Inside Conference Tips & Pointers (Wednesday)

ITI Bloggers March 22nd, 2006

• Join us for breakfast from 8:00-9:00 a.m. in the International Ballroom before Chris Sherman’s opening keynote. Then get a seat early near the front since we’re expecting near-record attendance.

• Grab a second cup of coffee in the Exhibit Hall when it opens at 9:45 a.m. You’ll have a few minutes to browse before the first session begins at 10:30 a.m. (And then the hardest part of your day will be choosing which sessions to attend.)

• Check your email at the Email Café, sponsored by Userful. It’s located at the rear of the Exhibit Hall and open during Exhibit Hall hours (until 5:45 p.m. on Wednesday).

• View up-to-the-minute updates to this blog running live on the large-screen monitor at the Information Today booth #525.

• Relax with friends at the Wine & Cheese Reception in the Exhibit Hall from 5:00-5:45 p.m.

AND THEN catch your breath, get a quick bit to eat, or go out with an early Dine-Around group (sign up on bulletin boards in the registration area), and…

• Come back for a fun (and possibly raucous) evening panel session, the Digi TechForum: Looking at Dead and Emerging Technologies, sponsored by Palinet, and moderated by Scott Brandt.

Building Community with a Wiki at CIL

ITI Bloggers March 22nd, 2006

Have you checked out the CIL wiki created by first-time attendee Meredith Farkas? Lots of good information, restaurants, things to do in DC, happenings at the conference, conference bloggers and more. Have a look and contribute to the CIL community.

Popular Workshops Kick Off Computers in Libraries 2006

ITI Bloggers March 21st, 2006

Several hundred attendees started off Computers in Libraries 2006 early today by attending pre-conference workshops to hear industry luminaries like Gary Price, Steven Cohen, Michael Stephens, and others. The room for Searcher Academy was packed. Pictured here is Mary Ellen Bates passing around handouts while Greg Notess gets started. Web Managers Academy, an all-day workshop like Searcher Academy, buzzed during the opening minutes as Darlene Fichter asked people to talk with their neighbors about their latest projects.

Greg Notess’s workshop this afternoon on how to build an online tutorial in less than 30 minutes is a full 3-hour session, since it seems he needs more than 30 minutes to explain just how to do it!

More workshops are scheduled for Saturday, so to enrich your conference experience stop by the registration desk to register.

T’was the Night Before the Conference…

ITI Bloggers March 21st, 2006

And all through the hotel, not a person was stirring, not even the staff,
When down on the concourse there arose such a clatter
That I rushed down the escalator to see what was the matter.

The registration desk was bustling at five in the morning
To welcome the hundreds of early workshop attendees
Who came from afar as dawn was a-borning
To listen and learn and not just to see…

I’ve always wanted to write “The Night Before A Conference,” but obviously I’m no Clement Moore.

The night (and day) before a conference is exciting for everyone, including the staff at ITI who have spent months in the planning stages, the exhibitors who are building booths in the exhibit hall, the attendees who have traveled from dozens of countries, and the speakers who have proposed, then prepared and practiced their presentations –- of course for the bloggers who have been tuning up their blog tools!

If you have more, or better doggerel to add to my attempt above, please drop me a note, and I’ll post some more verses.

It’s Conference Time! Loading the Truck

ITI Bloggers March 17th, 2006

Even Tom Hogan Sr gets into the act as everyone pitches in to get ready for next week.

No matter if we count pounds or boxes, we ship a lot of materials to Washington for Computers in Libraries 2006. With the registration numbers running well ahead of last year, all the staff is making lists and checking them twice to be sure we will be ready for “show time” next week.

John Yersak, VP of Administration, and head honcho at registration desk ran some numbers for me yesterday. His guesstimate is about 10,000 pounds of freight — think about boxes and boxes, and more boxes, of final programs, proceedings, and conference bags, (and think about how heavy your own bag feels at the end of a long conference day).

From the office at 143 Old Marlton Pike in Medford, we ship about 80 boxes, and then bring another 25 or so in the van that you see Tom Sr loading in this photo. That includes everything from staplers and pens for the registration desk to computers, monitors, printers, cables, and even the candy dishes. (Someone goes out to buy the candy after we get to Washington!)

Whew, I’m tired already! Keep your fingers crossed that all those boxes and pounds of freight arrive on schedule. But no matter what, you can count on the registration desk, and John’s crew, to be open and ready for action bright and early on Tuesday morning.

Calling CIL Bloggers

ITI Bloggers March 4th, 2006

If you’re planning to blog at CIL, please drop me an email with the name of your blog, and its URL. You’ll get a bright green Blogger ribbon in your badge envelope – and the top of this blog will link to a page that lists all the CIL blogs and bloggers. (The CIL wiki also has a list of bloggers, so add your name to that list, too.)

The tag for all blog posts and Flickr photos will be CIL2006.
