Exhibit Hall Busy During Tuesday Networking Time

ITI Bloggers June 8th, 2004

The Info-Expo Exhibit Hall was busy this morning during the no-conflict time, a “good thing” according to exhibitors who have been somewhat disappointed by the lack of walk-in traffic. Reports from SLA are that the numbers are down from last year in New York, from about 6,700 to around 3,716 total, including members, exhibit traffic, and exhibitors and staff. Word is that exhibitors expect Toronto to be a better draw.

Thomson Scientific’s New CEO

ITI Bloggers June 8th, 2004

Paula and I just fininshed talking with Thomson Scientific’s new CEO, Vin Caraher, who’s a long time Thomson employee. Even a non-Thomson company he worked for was acquired by Thomson. He talked about migrating from a product mentality to a solutions mentality within Thomson and discussed some platform integration initiatives at Thomson that will allow for a single interface to multiple pieces of Thomson-owned content. What distinguishes Thomson’s Web of Science and Web of Knowledge from Elsevier’s Scopus? According to Vin, Thomson is more multi-disciplinary and has a longer backfile (its Century of Science). Now I suppose we need rebuttal from Elsevier.

Line Dancing in the Exhibition Hall

ITI Bloggers June 8th, 2004

They just finished line dancing instruction in the back of the exhibit hall. I couldn’t figure out why they were doing this during the "non-compete" time. Someone suggested it was to remind people of the booths at the far end of the hall. If so, it worked.

SLA News Division Honors Gary Price

ITI Bloggers June 8th, 2004

Web resource guru and fellow blogger (Resource Shelf) Gary Price was honored by the SLA News Divison last night for his unflagging and selfless 24/7 work in keeping the news librarians themselves up to date. It took not one, but five people to do the honors for Gary as he received the Agnes Henebry Roll of Honor Award at the News Division Awards Banquet, sponsored by ProQuest and held at the Belle Meade Plantaton.

Hear Gary in action today at several sessions. He is speaking on “Specialized Search Tools: Making the Invisible Web Visible,” at 12:15 in Governor’s Ballroom A. Later in the afternoon he shares the podium with fellow WebSearch University WebSearch University faculty member, Genie Tyburski, speaking on Web Tools in Governor’s Ballroom A and E. (Let’s hope they fill those rooms with chairs today instead of leaving the wide expanse of floor space at the back!)

New InfoHero Named by InMagic

ITI Bloggers June 8th, 2004

David Bratchford, Library Services Manager, Legal Aid Queensland, Australia, is InMagic’s new InfoHero. He won the award for his redesign of the LAQ Grants Handbook, the primary resource used for assessing requests for grants for legal aid and appeals against the refusal of legal aid. Sounds like a worthwhile project.

Not too surprisingly, he couldn’t attend the conference in Nashville, but with a new chapter "down under," hopefully InMagic can sponsor an event a bit closer to home to honor him.

Nerac Celebrates Product Launch

ITI Bloggers June 8th, 2004

I stopped at the Nerac reception yesterday afternoon to see and hear about its latest product offering for librarians. The new TOC Journal Watch Plus provides a single point solution for tracking and accessing documents from 21,000+ journals. According to a company representative, the enhancements in this product are centered around the needs of librarians to aid in promoting their library services.

Some advantages include: custom branding, Open URL compliant for easy retrieval of full text, new administrative tools, and statistical reports. One of the beta users, Martha Ellison of the 3M Library, was very pleased with the now live product. Some 800 end users within 3M subscribe and manage their own alerts.

Hot Topics??

ITI Bloggers June 8th, 2004

Thinking back to yesterday afternoon’s sessions, I’m wondering why some sessions were so full and others not. The one on EPA Ambassadors was packed, as was new roles for business librarians. But the “hot topic” of electronic records management wasn’t. Maybe it wasn’t as hot as SLA thought it would be. That’s a shame, because the presentations, particularly Leslie Fischer’s, were really thought-provoking.

Passing the Hat

ITI Bloggers June 8th, 2004

Both at the International Reception and at the Thomson Scientific party at the Frist Center for the Visual Arts (a wonderful venue — if you’re ever in Nashville, it definitely rates a visit) librarians were griping about the opening session. The consensus was that Carl Ledbetter shared too many family stories with us. His take on technology proved he’s very knowledgeable, but nothing he said was earthshattering.

More griping about the close of the session ensued. One librarian commented that it seemed like a church collection when SLA passed out envelopes in which to put your financial donation for SLA’s Professional Development activities. Don’t complain to the Professional Development Committee, composed of SLA members, they apparently didn’t know anything about SLA headquarter’s decision to pass the collection plate around the congregation, er, opening conference keynote address.

International Reception

ITI Bloggers June 8th, 2004

Yesterday’s International Reception provided special librarians from around the world the opportunity to meet each other. I renewed an acquaintance with Prof. Dr. Wolfram Neubauer, Direktor of the ETH Library in Zurich, whom I first met in Brighton at SLA’s Global 2000. SLA is trying to convince itself it’s international. It needs more than a reception at the annual conference to prove that. This isn’t something that needs more study. There have been studies. The Board has read those studies. But not enough has happened.

Enough carping from me. Here’s the positive news. The winner of the European Special Librarian of the Year (ESLY) award was IEE’s Janet Tomlinson. Congratulations to her! Well deserved, Janet!

Counting Steps in Opryland

ITI Bloggers June 7th, 2004

I recently bought an ‘adult Happy Meal’ from McDonald’s, consisting of a salad, a Dasani water, and a pedometer. Some of our other bloggers have described the size and setting of the immense Opryland complex, so what better way to demonstrate this than to count steps! On Sunday I logged 3,703 steps roaming the exhibit hall and the grounds, but today I am only at 1,604 (taking into account the cab ride I took this morning to avoid the humidity here in Nashville). Sometimes its hard to distinguish if you are indoors or outdoors because of the ecosystem they have created, complete with an indoor river with fish swimming past the tour boat.
