Paula and I just fininshed talking with Thomson Scientific’s new CEO, Vin Caraher, who’s a long time Thomson employee. Even a non-Thomson company he worked for was acquired by Thomson. He talked about migrating from a product mentality to a solutions mentality within Thomson and discussed some platform integration initiatives at Thomson that will allow for a single interface to multiple pieces of Thomson-owned content. What distinguishes Thomson’s Web of Science and Web of Knowledge from Elsevier’s Scopus? According to Vin, Thomson is more multi-disciplinary and has a longer backfile (its Century of Science). Now I suppose we need rebuttal from Elsevier.
