Taking the BQ Challenge

ITI Bloggers December 3rd, 2003

As I noted several blog entries ago, Barbara Quint challenged me with the task of identifying for you the best trade-show give-away item from Online Information 2003.

As you can see I’ve captured quite a haul of mouse pads, retractable phone lines for the computer bag, 3 containers of mints, a half-dozen pens, a yo-yo, and a deck of cards. And this, my friends, is only a sampling of the spoils I could have lifted from exhibitors wanting me to brand-identify with them.

It I took all this stuff back to the States with me, the customs people would suspect I was a kleptomaniac.

My award for Best Promo Item of Show? Well, I’ve always been a sucker for packaging. So I choose Mintel’s retractable phone cord in the distinctive yellow detergent-sized box (rear right in the photo). The packaging has a nice product tie in, since it’s an ad for www.gnpd.com, a service that reports consumer product launches.

Meta-tag Football

ITI Bloggers December 3rd, 2003

Among the many prize drawings going on in this year’s exhibit hall at the London Online Information Meeting, I got a special kick (as it were) from eMeta’s prize. I trust the game will be shipped to the lucky winner.

Electrified Industry Leaders

ITI Bloggers December 3rd, 2003

At a joint luncheon of NFAIS and EUSIDIC members today (Wednesday, 3 December), industry leaders were not exactly sending out enthusiastic impulses. I would, in fact, describe the general mood of the vendors relatively restrained this year. Most hope for an up-turn in business—and anytime soon would be great.

These three association officials appear, however, to be surrounded by positive vibes.

Left to right: Margie Hlava, President of NFAIS, Johan van Halm, President of Eusidic, and Linda Sacks, NFAIS president-elect.

A New Doo for Mary Ellen

ITI Bloggers December 3rd, 2003

Boiko may still be wearing his pony tail (see below), but—stop the virtual presses!!–columnist, speaker, and independent information professional Mary Ellen Bates (above) has lost her signature braid. Appearing for booth duty in the AIIP stand yesterday, she sported a brand new look. (BTW: To get her up to camera-lens level for this shot, I had her stand on a chair.) Lookin’ good, Mary Ellen.

Boiko’s Keynote Passes His Own Test

ITI Bloggers December 3rd, 2003

Bob Boiko, author of The Content Management Bible gave this morning’s opening keynote at International Online, kicking off a day of CM talks at the conference.

Pacing the stage, and at times walking right up to the edge, Boiko gave a talk that rang true.

He spoke of Content Management (CM) in holistic terms. He spoke not of users but of audiences, not of content imput-ers but of authors and contributors.

Authors care about applications (the stuff that helps them do their work), but audiences do not. Audiences expect content to be in the form of publications, and they will judge your system’s content against books and other media they know and use.

Some Dos and Don’ts from Boiko’s Talk

Want to get your project funded? Don’t sell your CM initiative to management as a way to be more efficient in, say, Web publishing. Sell it instead, as providing the organization with flexibility going forward to utilize information in meeting critical goals.

Want to get the job done? Don’t worry about all the content your organization possesses. That’s too monumental. Only focus on the critical stuff, the stuff that key people need to make key decisions.

Want to have your system accepted? Get to know your “audience.” Quit thinking of them as system “users.” The difference being?

“Audiences,” said Boiko” have the power to applaud or walk out.

Though Boiko spoke for a good 75-minutes, no one left the auditorium early this morning. And thus Boiko passed his own acid test for audience approval.

In my job as a content manager, I personally found his remarks both insightful and useful.

Patent Analysis Enhancements

ITI Bloggers December 3rd, 2003

On Dec. 2, Thomson Scientific released enhancements to two of its key products. Customers can now export original patent data from Delphion using a new Data Extract format, and then bring it into Derwent Analytics using a new import filter.

In addition, Delphion has added a Data Extract format for EndNote, Reference Manager, and ProCite, three Thomson Scientific bibliographic management products, as well as two Extensible Markup Language (XML) formats.

Thomson continues its strategy to integrate its information products.

Thomson Scientific is at Stand 248 in the exhibit hall.

Among the Missing

ITI Bloggers December 3rd, 2003

So who’s not exhibiting?

One surprise is LexisNexis.

And, according the the morning UK newspapers, PJB newsletters (SCRIP, Clinica) have been sold to London-based Informa (Lloyd’s List, Biotechniques) for 150 million pounds.

Nordic International Forum

ITI Bloggers December 3rd, 2003

The Nordic International Forum featured four speakers, one each from Sweden, Denmark, Finland, and Norway. I was particularly interested in the Danish presentation by Kirsten Larsen on the Danish Library Project at www.library.dk. Not only does it facilitate interlibrary lending among all types of Danish libraries — with 1.7 million loan requests so far this year — it also offers the ability for citizens to buy books.

Even Flood, who organized the Forum, noted that 20% of delegates at the conference were from Nordic countries.

Party Hearty

ITI Bloggers December 3rd, 2003

It wouldn’t be the London Online Information meeting without a full dance card of party invitations. This opening night was no exception to the rule. Information Today Editor John Eichorn and I only managed to crash two of the events . . .

At tonight’s Dialog bash, customers danced in the Empire Suite of London’s Café Royal on Regent Street. And as near as I could tell, a good time was being had by all.
